Abstract
The first record in Victoria of root rot on tomatoes caused by Phytophthora nicotianae var. nicotianae is presented. The fungus was consistently associated with the disease in commercial tomato crops. In glasshouse tests on potted plants in soil artificially infested with zoospores of P. nicotianae var. nicotianae, the severity and incidence of disease was greatest in pots saturated for 2 hours or longer and least when pots were allowed to drain immediately after watering. P. nicotianae var. nicotianae was reisolated from the diseased plants. In another pathogenicity test eight isolates of P. nicotianae var. nicotianae from different locations in northern Victoria caused severe root rot on tomato seedlings. The symptoms of root rot were similar to those seen in the field.
