Abstract

In a general context, the significance of a number of medicinal plants has been investigated in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. In this regard, to establish the anti-diabetic potential of Linderina Parviflora, one of the medicinal herbs this study was initiated. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the in vitro anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic activity of methanolic extracts of Linderina Parviflora leaves. During screening for phytochemicals the total phenolic and flavonoid content was estimated. In vitro antidiabetic activity was assessed by α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory assays. Acarbose was included as a standard drug. Methanolic leaf extracts was tested for antioxidant potentiality also. Further, the extract was utilized for GC-MS analysis to know the distribution of various phytochemicals. The methanolic leaf extract was rich with total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The methanolic extract was showed 66.4±3.1 % DPPH scavenging activity at 40 µg mL-1. In in vitro study, an IC50 value of 14.6±0.2 µg mL-1 in α-amylase inhibitory assay was recorded. Whereas in α-glucosidase inhibition assay an IC50 value of 359.5 ± 0.1 µg mL-1 was noted. The GC-MS analysis revealed presence of phytoconstituents like 3-O-Methyl-D-glucose (59.71%), γ-Sitosterol (25.12%) in the extract. The results of the current study demonstrated that Linderina Parviflora leaf may possess antidiabetic activity. Further studies are warranted to encourage conventional use of this herb in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
