Abstract

Phytochemical investigation into the roots of Piper nigrum Linn. led to the isolation of ten compounds, including six lignans (1–6), two aromatic compounds (7–8), one lactone (9), and one sesquiterpenoid (10). Compounds 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were isolated from Piperaceae for the first time. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectral methods, including UV, NMR, CD, optical rotation and other spectroscopy methods. The chemotaxonomic significance of isolated compounds was also elucidated.
