Abstract

Psephellus genus includes approximately 75–80 species in the world and 34 taxons of them are distributed in Anatolia. It has occured as a new genus by transferring 12 sections from genus Centaurea. Psephellus goeksunensis (Aytaç & H. Duman) Greuter & Raab-Straube (Syn. Centaurea goeksunense) is an endemic species of Adana region. In this study, n-hexane, chloroform, methanol and buthanol extracts were prepared from aerial parts of plant and chemical compounds were determined. In addition, cytotoxic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of extracts were investigated. As a result; luteolin, chlorogenic acid and apigenin were detected by HPLC. Methanol extract showed highest radical scavenging activity in TEAC and OH.- radical scavenging activity assays. Hexane and chloroform extracts showed strong cytotoxicity against PC-3 cells with IC50 values of 7.052 ± 1.12 and 8,861 ± 1.33 µg/mL, respectively. Hexane extract showed strongest activity (IC50: 3 ± 0.6 and 6,98 ± 1.36 µg/mL) in the iNOS and NF-κB inhibition assays, To our knowledge, this is the first report on secondary metabolites and biological activities of Psephellus goeksunensis.
