Abstract

Summary Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in the United Kingdom and the United States. The prevention of smoking has been identified by the World Health Organisation as the most potentially effective preventive health measure that developed countries can take. Physiotherapists are in an ideal situation to promote smoking cessation. Thus a questionnaire was sent to senior physiotherapists to ascertain their level of knowledge of the effects of smoking. The responses showed that knowledge was poor but many respondents commented that they felt they should know more in order to help patients.
