Abstract
Summary Paper chromatographic analysis of the tannins in the leaves and twigs of the Indian Amla plant, Emblica officinalis , has revealed the occurrence of such tannins as corilagin, glucogallin, chebulagic acid, chibulinic acid, 3-6-di-galloyl-glucose, ellagic acid, gallic acid etc., in addition to some other still unidentified components and also the UV-fluorescent spots, during the fruiting season. Both leaves and twigs show a decrease of total tannin materials in per gram dry-weight of their tissue, towards the mature stages of this season. This includes the fall in the individual concentration of glucogallin, corilagin, chebulagic acid, chibulinic acid, ellagic acid and 3-6-di-galloyl-glucose. Gallic acid, however, shows decreased concentration in the leaves but increased in the twigs during the same period. There is general tendency of decrease in the concentration of the hydrolysable gallotannin components, in both lea.f and twig, during the advance of mature stages of the fruiting season.
