Abstract

This study investigated the protective effect of Azadirachta indica (neem) leaves against cisplatin-induced hepato and nephrotoxicity. Neem leaves showed significant protection as evidenced by the decrease of elevated serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, creatinine, uric acid and urea. This improvement of physiological function was associated with high protection against histopathological injury induced by cisplatin on liver and kidney. These results suggest that neem leaves pre, co and post-treatment can prevent the hepato and nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin. Key words: Cisplatin, Azadirachta indica, liver, kidney, rats.
