Abstract

1. 1. The segmental ganglia of Nereis virens contain two large neurons which appear to form part of the efferent pathway to the longitudinal muscle in the escape reflex mediated by the lateral and median giant fibres. 2. 2. The 4B neurons form electrotonic and chemically transmitting junctions with the lateral giant fibres and an excitatory chemically transmitting junction with the median fibre. 3. 3. Transmission at the synapse with the lateral giant is stable at 10 Hz, but the synapse with the median giant fatigues rapidly.
