Abstract

Male-sterile barley has become a useful tool for study of barley stripe. The disease does not reduce germination. Expression of the disease may be conditioned by the amount of growth from the spore during development of the seed, or by the season of planting. Two types of physiologic specialization in the causal fungus were identified. Four sources of genetic resistance, involving at least six different genes, were recognized. Resistance was dominant in Hannchen, partially dominant in Trebi, recessive in Club Mariout, and weak in male-sterile.
