Abstract
Formation of the steady-state potential in the end region of magnetic mirror systems is described. The plama-sheath equation is derived, and necessary conditions for the formation of continuous potential in nonuniform open magnetic fields are discussed on the basis of kinetic analysis. Effects of the expanding magnetic field and the ionization of neutral gas on the potential formation are studied, showing the calculated results of potential profiles in plasma flowing along open magnetic field lines.
