Abstract

The Royal Technical College, Glasgow, has the status of a University College. It was affiliated to the University of Glasgow in 1913 and has been on the University Grants Committee's list since 1919. It had its origin in Anderson's University founded in 1796 under the remarkable will of a remarkable man, John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy in Glasgow University, who bequeathed the whole of his property, "except what is contained in the painted chest, with three locks," to the public "for the good of mankind and the improvement of science."
