Abstract

If your music collection contains everything from Elvis to Elgar and Franz Ferdinand to Franz Liszt, you should not be surprised: according to ”complex-network theory“ our musical tastes may be more diverse than we realize. Renaud Lambiotte and Marcel Ausloos of the University of Liège, Belgium, have analysed data from the music-sharing website audioscrobbler.com and found that most people enjoy a wide variety of music than spans several traditional categories. The results could provide a new way to classify musical genres and might be useful for analysing market trends (arXiv.org/abs/ physics/0508233).
