Abstract

The effect of pressure on the electronic band structure and density of face-centered cubic iron has been calculated via the Augmented Plane Wave method. The results indicate that, at core pressures, the electronic structure of iron is very similar to that at surface conditions. The postulated electronic transition does not occur until fourfold compression. The calculated equation of state is consistent with the latest seismic inner core models and predicts a Grüneisen ratio of 1.8 ± 0.4 and a temperature of 5500 ± 500°K with an adiabatic gradient.
