Abstract

A cermet coating was applied on duralumin and steel substrates by plasma spraying of a mechanically alloyed composite powder composed of 30 vol % of a nanosized carbon material such as diamond, carbon, and soot and 70 vol % of a Ni-Mo matrix. Upon mechanical alloying of the powder mixture, the phase composition of the initial carbon material changed and nickel and molybdenum carbides were formed. The content of the metal phases decreased to 27 vol %. The following annealing at 1130°C resulted in a complete transformation of the diamond phase into carbides and a reduction of the metal phase content to 3 vol %. The plasma-deposited coating contained only carbide phases; the microhardness of the coating was ∼5.7 GPa.
