Abstract

ABSTRACT The effect of gamma irradiation on the physico-mechanical properties of nanocomposites-based ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and polypropylene (PP) blends reinforced with CaCO3 nanoparticles was studied. The nanocomposites were characterized in terms of mechanical, thermal and morphological properties and XRD diffraction. The results indicated, generally, that the elongation at break (E%) was found to decrease by increasing the ratio of PP in the nanocomposite blends and the irradiation dose. The E% values of unirradiated pure EPDM and PP polymers were 1785.0 and 125.0%, respectively. The nanocomposite EPDM/PP (50%)/CaCO3 irradiated to 60 kGy displayed the best properties.
