Abstract
A FORMAL program to train physician's assistants in dermatology will begin at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in September 1971. The decision to launch such a program was based on the well-demonstrated need to expand the delivery of medical care; the addition of a new member to the health team offers the promise of helping to meet this need within a relatively short time. Most physicians in practice find themselves burdened by the more mundane aspects of patient management. Routine tasks which traditionally have been the physician's to perform limit both the time available for more complicated diagnoses and the number of patients that can be seen. Dermatologists are no exception to this situation. Any substantial increase in the number of physicians is at least a decade away, even if concerted efforts towards this goal were now undertaken.
