Abstract

Saturday time use of parents (N = 46) of school-aged, physically disabled children was examined using time budget methodology. Data from the parents in 109 households (N = 218) in a nationwide study were selected for comparison. MANCOVA procedures revealed that categorical time use differed between groups (p <.01); thus, follow-up ANCOVAs were performed. The amount of time used for child care activities was greater (p <.01) for parents of physically disabled children than for parents in the nationwide sample. The difference in time used for housework duties approached significance (p =.06), but anticipated differences in time used for other categories, including nonwork travel and leisure activities, were not found. An additional finding was that fathers of the disabled children assumed a greater than anticipated share of child care responsibilities. An ex post facto analysis revealed that two child related variables, age (Beta = -.30) and ability to perform daily tasks (Beta = -.40), were significantly related to time used for child care (R2 =.30). Qualitative observations related to time use of parents were also made.
