Abstract

The work environment and work tasks should be adapted to make work possible to persons with permanent physical disabilities. A physical disability complicates the journey to and from work and the physical demands at work. The aim of this study was to describe the journey to and from work, physical load, redesign measures, and mental strain at work among workers with physical disabilities. The subjects (n = 249) were employed, used some mobility aid, and received a hightened or special disability aid. The data were acquired with a computer-assisted telephone interview. Only some environmental measures were carried out at work to improve the mobility of the subjects. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were more common among the subjects with physical disabilities than among the Finnish population in general. Nevertheless, most of the subjects were satisfied with the atmosphere and supervision at work, and overall they regarded their work as a very important part of their life.
