Abstract

Despite the physicality of sport and the emphasis on the body, a paucity of research exists on physical violence in sport. In this chapter, definitions will be provided, as well as prevalence rates outside and inside sport contexts. Prevalence data indicate that physical violence remains a common experience, although not as common as psychological and sexual violence or neglect. Across various studies, the most frequently reported forms of physical violence include being administered excessive exercise (usually as punishment), and being forced to train despite injury, pain, or exhaustion, although debates exist about whether these acts constitute physical or psychological violence. Recommendations are made for further research on physical violence in sport, including more clarity with respect to definitions and operationalisation, and cross-cultural differences in the use of physical violence.
