Abstract

The effects of physical training on schizophrenics are sparsely investigated. This article presents an overview of investigations on the subject. There seem to be great methodologic problems concerning the topic. It is emphasized that physical training of schizophrenics often aims at different goals: normalizing physiologic reduced work capacity, rehabilitation, psychotherapeutic ego support, and sociocultural integration of the patients. There are only a few controlled studies on the subject, and the published studies cannot document that physical training has an effect in the treatment of schizophrenia. A few studies indicate a possible effect, but further studies have to be made.□ Exercise, Physical training, Schizophrenia.
