Abstract

Purpose: Non-combat injuries are a serious health problem in today's armed forces. Several studies with Swiss Army trainees demonstrated that good individual physical fitness and more or better physical training (PT) sessions resulted in reduced injury incidence during basic military training. However, it is a big challenge to improve quantity and quality of PT within military structures. The main challenges are lack of infrastructure, well-educated sport instructors, and formation time. Therefore, different PT intervention studies regarding these problems were executed in the Swiss Army basic military training to investigate their effect on individual physical fitness development and injury prevention.
