Abstract

This paper outlines the origin and development of the profession of physical therapy in the United States of America. Its early history at the time of the First World War is traced, and an account is given of the formation of the national professional organisation. The changing face of education in physical therapy is described, including the advent of post–baccalaureate entry into professional training, and the growth of postgraduate specialisation. The nature and location of clinical practice, and the controls under which it takes place, are briefly outlined, and the paper concludes by taking a view of the future evolution of the profession.
