Abstract

1. (1) The physical structure of activated sludge flocs can be analysed and described to some extent by measuring the particle size and Thomas' α-value. 2. (2) During aerobic sludge stabilization both factors undergo changes which are paralleled by a reduction of organic matter within the flocs. 3. (3) Flocs formed of large particles, or of particles with different sizes, have a lower water content than flocs formed of particles of small diameter. 4. (4) Thè larger the particle size, the greater the effect of aerobic sludge stabilization in reducing the water content and increasing the density of flocs. 5. (5) Although aerobic stabilization leads to a denser floc with lower water content, the differences in the α-values between activated sludge flocs and inorganic chemical flocs are of the order of two magnitudes.
