Abstract

FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR THE physical sciences continues its downward spiral, says an updated analysis of federal R&D trends by the National Academies (NAS). The declines are having a direct impact on the future of those disciplines, charges an advocacy group for the physical sciences, which called a press briefing in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss the report's findings. We are beginning to lose ground, said Mary L. Good, chairman of the board of the Alliance for Research in Science & Technology for America (ASTRA). Good is also president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a former American Chemical Society president. Federal support for chemistry in the period 1993-97 declined 7.6% in constant dollars, said Stephen A.
