Abstract

It is shown how simple physical arguments yield estimates of the number of degrees of freedom governing Bénard convection. Those estimates are close to those arrived at by rigorous studies of dynamical systems associated to the partial differential equations of fluid mechanics. It is suggested that, guided by additional physical considerations, the estimate of the sufficient number of degrees of freedom may be reduced further.
