The Difference Between the Surge and Loop Prominences of December 19, 1956. Tandberg-Hanssen, E. Abstract Spectra of a bright loop prominence and of two bright surges have been analyzed, and relative line intensities indicate high-excitation conditions. The line widths indicate regions of different temperatures in the prominences. Since the observations cannot be interpreted in terms of one region with a single temperature and turbulent velocity, a possible interpretation is that the prominences consist of distinct domains, characterized by emissions from ionized helium, hydrogen, neutral helium, and metals, respectively. The loop seems to be intimately connected with the hot corona, where several coronal lines are observed, while the intrinsically brighter surges fade rapidly as they move into coronal regions. Spectra of the corona above the loop show the rare N 4086 and N 5445 coronal lines.
