Abstract

Physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials are important considerations in any study of desalination. This chapter briefly reviews certain key physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is concerned with key terms and definitions that are used in engineering practice. The chapter provides references detailing procedures that will allow the practitioner to estimate key physical and chemical properties of materials. Process concepts that find application in desalination studies are briefly also reviewed. The chapter examines the properties of mixtures and several key concepts as they relate to material properties. It provides illustrative examples related to physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials relevant to desalination processes.
