Abstract

Glasses with chemical formula of (90-x) TeO2 - 10 ZnO – xBao, where 25≤ x ≤ 35 (mol%), have been prepared using the melt quenching technique and investigation on their properties was performed. The areas of studies compose of density, molar volume, Vickers’s hardness, absorption and optical band gap measurement. The density of the glasses decreased while their molar volume values increases with the increase of barium oxide content in tellurite glasses. The hardness of glasses are also measured and found to increase with increasing of BaO concentration. The optical absorption spectra of the glasses have been measured in the wavelength range 200 – 1,100 nm. It has been found that, the fundamental absorption edge has been identified from the optical absorption spectra. The values of optical band gap were increased with the addition of BaO.
