Abstract

Epoxy resin was prepared by reaction of bisphenol-A and epichlorohydrin. The alkyd resin was prepared by reaction of palm oil as mono fatty acid, glycerol, and phthalic anhydride. The two resins were mixed in ratios of epoxy/alkyd of 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, and 80:20 and showed excellent dispersion. The physical and mechanical properties were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FT-IR, viscosity, water resistance, chemical resistance, hardness, impact strength, and adhesion. Thermal properties were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis. The coating prepared using 80:20 epoxy to alkyd resin exhibited higher hardness but lower impact strength than coatings with lower ratios.
