Abstract

Introduction. Correct classification of cerebral palsy is essential for the effective treatment and rehabilitation of affected patients. The most common form of assessing a patient is determining his gross motor functions. For patients who can walk, a 6-minute walk test can be used to evaluate their gait. Aim. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of physical activity on the gait efficiency in children with cerebral palsy. Materials and methods. The study involved 17 children aged 12-16 years old at 2nd level in GMFCS. Two 6-minute walk tests and a 72-hour measurement of physical activity using the McRoberts Dynaport MoveMonitor were performed. Results. Statistical analysis indicates important influence of physical activity on gait efficiency measured by 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Statistically significant deviations were observed between the distance covered in the 6MWT by the respondents and the normative values. Conclusion. Children with cerebral palsy at 2nd level in GMFCS, have lower gait efficiency than healthy children in the corresponding age range. Increased physical activity has a statistically significant effect on the change of the gait efficiency determined in the 6-minute walk test.
