Abstract

T his article presents a brief history and update on the relationship of exercise to health. The terms activity, exercise, and physical fitness are defined in order to clarify the shift in emphasis from one of exercise to improve fitness to that of activity to improve health and decrease risk. Prevalence rates of women’s participation in exercise are reported, and inactivity as a risk factor for diseases and disorders that are prevalent in women are addressed. Last, suggestions are given for increasing activity among women.
