Abstract

DNA sequence analysis of the plastid intron rps 16 from each of 66 species in the African genus Moraea (Iridaceae: Irideae), including examples of all the major species clusters in the genus, brings new data for the phylogenetic tree. The results show that the current subgeneric classification poorly reflects the phylogenetic relationships of species within Moraea. This work confirms the results of a phylogenetic study using morphological characters. Moraea is paraphyletic if Barnardiella, Galaxia, Hexaglottis, Homeria and Gynandriris are recognized as separate genera.
