Abstract

Interferon α is produced by the cells in response to the viral infection and play important role in viral infections. IFN-α coding sequence was amplified from the bovine lymphocytes collected from Bos indicus (Indian cattle breed-Hallikar) and cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequence of the bovine IFN-α was compared with the sequences of different animals. The IFN-α nucleotide sequence of B. indicus shows 99.1 % similarity with Bos taurus, with changes at four amino acid positions. Comparison of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence with other species has shown varied structural similarities.
