Abstract

G- and C-banded karyotypes of Peromyscus ( Megadontomys ) thomasi are described and compared with those of other peromyscine rodents. The autosomal banded karyotype of P. thomasi is identical to the karyotype proposed as primitive for the genus Peromyscus except for two pericentric inversions. Alternate cladograms were composed based on chromosomal rearrangements described here and in the literature and were contrasted with phylogenies based on morphologic data. Banded chromosomal data support a phylogeny that treats Megadontomys as a subunit of Peromyscus ( sensu lato ). Present chromosomal evidence also indicates at least a possible sister group relationship between the genera Peromyscus and Onychomys .
