Abstract

This chapter presents online 3-D printing platforms as a relevant device that allows companies to create customized and on-demand customer experiences by shifting from online creations to tangible and physical objects. Although it is still too early to precisely determine where this digital technology will be adopted across industries and sectors, it appears to hold great potential, driven by constant progress in both the performance of the machines and the variety of materials that can be used. Thus, this chapter first sheds light on the progress of 3-D printing technology and its role in engaging customers in a co-creation process where they can create their own consumption items, ranging from food to furniture, by using different 3-D printing platforms. Second, this chapter explains the challenges and opportunities related to 3-D printing platforms that companies need to consider in designing customized customers experiences, linking both online and offline, to offer highly customized and on-demand experiences to their customers.
