Abstract

ONLY a few types of esters are known which can be converted under mild and specific conditions to their corresponding acids1–9. I have observed that carboxylic acids are readily obtained from their phthalimidomethylesters (I): on treatment with dry hydrogen chloride in dry dioxane or ethylacetate for 16 hr., with dry hydrogen bromide in acetic acid for 10–15 min. or with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol at room temperature for 3 hr.
