Abstract

Endometriosis is common benign gynecologic endometrial disorder that causes infertility and pelvic pain. Endometriosis is associated with aberrant inflammatory responses, increased production of prostaglandins, and progesterone resistance. Recently, aldo-keto reductases (1B and 1C) were shown to play an important role in metabolism of prostaglandins and progesterone. In this study, we assessed the aldo-keto reductase gene expression in endometrial cancer cells (ECC)-1 that were treated with phthalate, which has been previously shown to mediate the development of gynecological disorders. The data indicated that phthalate increased expression of aldo-keto reductases in endometrial cells and stimulated production of prostaglandins and may be involved in the development of progesterone resistance.
