Abstract

Purpose: Brachytherapy (BT) treatment planning systems (TPSs) generally rely on the AAPM TG-43 dose calculation formalism, which approximates patient composition as water for all radionuclides and clinical applications. This approach does not produce accurate results for BT applicators that include high-Z shielding to collimate the radiation for protecting healthy tissues. While advanced dose calculation algorithms beyond the TG-43 formalism are on the market, the software is not readily available and not all applicators are modeled.
