Abstract

Phrasal verbs are a newer syntactic formation which came into existence with the transition from Old English to Middle English. The term phrasal verb in this paper names a construction which consists of a verb followed by a prepositional adverb: a construction which acts as a single syntactic and semantic unit. The paper also lists the tests used for sorting out the true phrasal verbs, origins of phrasal verbs, as well as conditions which are required for phrasal verb to be (dis)continuous.
