Abstract

Clinical trials are not only mandatory for the approval of new medicines but also beneficial to patients as they ensure evidence based medical practice. Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI) under the aegis of Indian Council of Medical Research was established on 20th July 2007. It is mandatory to register all the clinical trials conducted in India with CTRI. To analyze the clinical trials related to diabetes registered with Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI). Clinical Trial Registry of India was searched by the keyword “Diabetes”. All the listed clinical trials were classified according to the year of registration, type of study and type of medicines. A total of 668 clinical trials were registered with CTRI since 2007. In 2017 alone 164 clinical trials were registered. Next was in 2010, where 80 clinical trials were registered. Of 668 clinical trials, 517 were interventional, 93 were observational studies and rest 58 were not specified. A total of 300 clinical trials conducted were medicine related of which 95 were of ayurvedic medicines, three and two were Unani and Homeopathy medicines respectively. 15 were post marketing surveillance studies and five were BA/BE studies. It is evident from the data that there are more medicine related and interventional clinical trials registered with CTRI. It was surprising to know that only five were BA/BE studies. However, a more comprehensive analysis would provide insights of registered clinical trials related to diabetes registered with CTRI.
