Abstract
The mirage effect is the basis for an absolute and non-contact measurement of the thermal diffusivity of materials. Analytical expressions are derived for the photothermal signal, when the probe beam scans the wavelength of the thermal wave generated by the pump beam in the sample. An experimental scheme with an incoherent pump beam is presented and an application reported.
