Abstract

The relationship between the interception of solar radiation and dry matter production was studied in a crop of Amaranthus hybridus. The results show that photosynthetic efficiency of this crop was 2.8% but this rose to 10.9% with the addition of NPK 15:15:15 compound fertilizer. The mean reflection coefficient was 0.28 ± 0.06 while the extinction coefficient ranged form 1.01 to 0.19. The extinction coefficient showed a rapid decrease with time and leaf area index.
