Abstract

(Submitted by Corresponding Member Z. Lalchev on April 2, 2013)AbstractForage productivity and quality are the most significant traits of alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.). The objective ofthat study was to compare the photosyn-thetic properties of some trifoliolate and multifoliolate alfalfa genotypes. Plantswere selected at the Institute of Agriculture and Seed Science “Obraztsov chi-flik” – Ruse. MF23 multifoliolate alfalfa line and the two trifoliolate ones withhigh and low productivity and standard variety Prista 2 were investigated. Thestudied fluorescence parameters indicate the lack of differences between low andhigh yield alfalfa trifoliolate populations irrespective of their different produc-tivity, while MF23 shows enhanced PSII down-regulation, which relates to ahigher potential to adjust MF23 to environmental changes. Better adjustmentto the environment is one of the factors that determine higher productivity ofMF23 in comparison to multifoliolate alfalfa plants studied previously.Key words: multifoliolate alfalfa, photosynthesis, chlorophyll a fluores-cence1013
