Abstract

Despite the world-wide distribution of the family Compositae, there is still no clear indication as to the incidence of Compositae dermatitis, and, in particular, its relationship to cutaneous photosensitivity. What is known is that Compositae dermatitis, as a short-term reaction, occurs as an occupational problem, particularly in florists and agricultural workers, some of whom come to recognize that, at certain periods of the year, they will be off work with an attack of Compositae dermatitis affecting usually the exposed skin, primarily that of the face.At the same time, a chronic dermatitis reaction also occurs as a result of contact with Compositae plants. What is not known, however, is how many of these chronic dermatitis sufferers also have photosensitivity. I believe that the number of features common to both chronic Compositae dermatitis and photosensitivity dermatitis warrants the assumption that photosensitivity is present in the former until proved otherwise.
