Abstract

There has been considerable interest in the study of characterization of photochromic compounds in membrane and film systems because they are candidates for useful photoresponsive materials. Many matrices having ordered structure such as monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers and liquid crystalline films are the subjects of intensive research. In this review the recent development in photoresponsive membrane systems, mainly the photochromic supramolecular systems such as monolayers, LB multilayers and liquid crystalline thin films are discussed in some detail and the relation between photochromic molecular reaction and ordered matrix structure will be given. These membrane systems may be applied to novel photonic fields, such as photo-switching of mass or information transfer and device applications for optical data storage and display.
