Abstract
The use of disodium tetraphenanthroporphyrazine (Na 2TPP) as sensitizer for the photoreduction of methyl viologen (MV 2+) was investigated. Visible light (400 – 800 nm) irradiation was employed with disodium ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and cystein (Cys) as electron donors. Irradiation was carried out in a mixture containing dimethylformamide (DMF) and an aqueous surfactant ( i.e. cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium lauryl sulphate (NaLS), hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDPC) and dodecylethylmethylammonium bromide (DEMAB)). The efficiency of reduction of methyl viologen by this chromophore was found to be sensitive to the pH of the solution. The photosensitization process was more efficient in anionic surfactants than in cationic surfactants. Hydrogen production was achieved using colloidal platinum in polyvinyl alcohol (PtPVA 49 000). The quantum yield of gas production was low compared with that of MV +. production.
