Abstract

Fluorescence and photochemical processes in crystalline 5-fluorouracil (FU) were studied. It has been found by the spectral, luminescent, and ESR methods that upon photoirradiation of FU photoinduced electron and proton transfers occur, leading to the formation of three hydroxo tautomers and radical ion pairs, which are stabilized by the crystal matrix and luminesce with the emission wavelengths of 375, 415, 455 nm, and 530, 555 nm, respectively.
