Abstract

Energy metabolism and water consumption of a northern Agelaius phoeniceus phoeniceus and southern A. p. mearnsi population of the red-winged blackbird differed in their response to temperature and photoperiod changes. The energy intake of A. p. mearnsi was greater at low temperatures than A. p. phoeniceus. The energy intake in response to photoperiod was similar in both groups. Agelaius p. mearnsi consumed more water in response to low temperatures and long photoperiods than did A. p. phoeniceus. These differences may be functionally related to differences in the geographical distribution of the two groups.
