Introduction

Achieving net zero will be the biggest technological challenge of the 21st century. A truly global, all-pervasive challenge impacting every application, market, and technology. A random sample of annual reports of firms associated with the photonics industry shows a 7-fold increase in terms associated with sustainability (climate, energy etc) between 2016 and 2020.
