Abstract

AbstractApplication of photonic crystals (PhCs) is a new direction in gas sensor design. PhCs can consist of periodic arrangements of dielectric materials with different refractive indexes, which can be divided into one-dimensional PhC, two-dimensional PhC and three-dimensional PhC (namely, 1D PhC, 2D PhC, 3D PhC) according to the structures. Present chapter describes above mentioned materials and analyzes prospects of their application in gas sensors. Disadvantages of photonic crystals, which can limit their application in gas sensors, are being discussed as well. Chapter includes 6 figures and 57 references.KeywordsPhotonic CrystalPhotonic Crystal FiberTotal Internal ReflectionDefect ModeCoupling LossThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
